Things to Do in Malta

How much time you need

Malta is small – about 27 km end to end – but the bus network is slow and the sights cluster in a handful of areas, so plan by the day rather than by distance. Three to four days covers the essentials: one day for Valletta, one on the water, a half-day in Mdina and a run along the south coast. Add a day for Gozo, and another if you want time on a beach.

The old cities

Valletta is the one sight nobody skips – the fortified capital, St John’s Co-Cathedral and the harbour view from the Upper Barrakka Gardens, all walkable in half a day. Across the water, the Three Cities give you the same Baroque streets with a fraction of the crowds and a short harbour ferry to reach them.

Inland, the walled town of Mdina and neighbouring Rabat makes a quiet half-day of lanes and ramparts. On Sunday mornings the fishing village of Marsaxlokk fills its quay with a market and rows of painted luzzu boats.

A day on the water

The Blue Lagoon on Comino is the signature trip, and the colour of the water lives up to the photos – but the bay is small and fills by mid-morning in summer, so take the first boat out or a late-afternoon departure. On the south coast, small boats run into the Blue Grotto sea caves from Wied iż-Żurrieq, best in the morning light. Malta is also one of the Mediterranean’s better bases for diving and snorkelling, with wrecks and caverns close to shore.

Older than the pyramids

Malta’s megalithic temples predate Stonehenge and the pyramids of Giza. Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra stand on the southern cliffs and pair naturally with the Blue Grotto; Ġgantija on Gozo is usually seen as part of a Gozo day trip. Each site has its own ticket desk and sits on a bus route, so a guided tour adds context and transport but is not essential.

Beaches, families and getting around

The sandy beaches are in the north – Golden Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa and Mellieħa Bay – and they are ranked in best beaches in Malta; Gozo keeps its own shortlist, led by the red sand of Ramla, in best beaches in Gozo. Families tend to add Popeye Village, the film-set cove near Mellieħa, and a ride on the hop-on hop-off bus, which runs two loops past most of the island’s sights.
