Best Boutique Hotels in Malta: Where to Stay (2026)

The decision here is which neighbourhood, and whether you need a pool – not the star rating. Malta's boutique hotels are conversions of Baroque palazzos and townhouses, and nearly all of them run 25 rooms or fewer. Valletta holds the dense cluster, Mdina has the one palace hotel, and Sliema is where the newer, cheaper conversions are opening.

Which one should you book?

Ursulino Valletta

Book this one for a first Malta boutique stay with the fewest unknowns. It is a restored townhouse on St Ursula Street, in the quieter southern half of the capital but still inside the grid, so the cathedral and the Merchants Street restaurants are a few minutes on foot.

What it sells is the building and the address rather than facilities, which at Valletta townhouse scale is the norm rather than a shortcoming. The section below on the palazzo premium sets out which hotels here genuinely have a pool and which do not.

Iniala Harbour House

The design pick, and the most expensive room on this list by a wide margin. Iniala opened in November 2020 on St Barbara Bastions with 23 rooms, behind a restored bastion facade, and its interiors were commissioned rather than specified from a catalogue.

It is also one of the very few Valletta boutiques with real water: an indoor pool plus a seasonal outdoor one, which almost no conversion at this scale can offer. Note that Booking.com now lists the property as Iniala Valletta.

66 Saint Paul's and Spa

Book it if you want a pool on the roof and still want to be inside Valletta. The hotel has 18 rooms and a small rooftop outdoor pool with a terrace and poolside bar above St Paul Street, which is a rare combination in the capital.

The policy is the detail to check first. Booking.com lists children over 12 as welcome, sets a minimum check-in age of 18, and offers no cots or extra beds, so it works like an adults-and-teenagers hotel without being marketed as one.

Palazzo Consiglia

The combination almost no Valletta boutique manages: a rooftop plunge pool and a spa pool downstairs. It is a palazzo conversion of about 13 rooms on St Ursula Street, a few doors from Ursulino, with original features kept and a contemporary finish laid over them.

The plunge pool is exactly that – somewhere to cool off after a day in the heat rather than somewhere to swim lengths. Neither pool's heating is published, so ask directly if you are travelling outside summer.

Casa Ellul

The romance pick, and the clearest illustration of what a Valletta townhouse hotel is and is not. Part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, it runs a short list of individually designed suites in a restored 19th-century building, several with a private terrace or a freestanding bath.

Casa Ellul has no swimming pool at all, confirmed on its own Booking.com listing on 28 August 2026 – some suites have a hot tub instead. That is the trade you make for the building, the service and the address.

The Xara Palace

The special-occasion answer, and the only hotel inside Mdina's walls. A Relais & Châteaux conversion with 17 keys – seven rooms and ten suites – it puts you in the silent city after the day coaches leave, which is the whole reason to pay for it.

Its pool is seasonal, running roughly June to September according to Booking.com, and the hotel does not publish whether it is heated. Outside those months you are booking the building and the bastion views rather than a swim.

Marea Boutique Hotels

The value pick, and a genuinely adults-only one. Marea opened on 1 February 2023 on Rudolph Street in Sliema, which makes it one of the newest boutique conversions on the islands and explains why it undercuts the Valletta names so heavily.

Booking.com lists it as adults-only with a minimum age of 18 and children not accepted, a firmer rule than several hotels that market the label harder. There is no pool; rooms have kitchenettes, and there is a rooftop patio. The larger properties along this strip are in our Sliema and St Julian's hotels guide.

Two more worth knowing about

Rosselli – AX Privilege is the Valletta boutique that takes children. Around 25 rooms on Merchants Street, with a pool and a serious restaurant downstairs, it is the one to look at when a boutique stay has to work for a family rather than a couple. Check Rosselli rates.

Hugo's Boutique Hotel is the St Julian's option, and it is adults-only with 40 rooms. Its outdoor pool is seasonal, running roughly May to September and only from 10:00 to 18:00, and it sits in the middle of Paceville – lively rather than restful. What the Valletta palazzo premium actually buys

Boutique rates in Valletta look steep next to a four-star resort, and the instinct is to assume they buy facilities. They do not. They buy the building, the address and a staff-to-guest ratio a 500-room resort cannot run.

Pools are the clearest test. Of the Valletta hotels here, only three have one: Iniala Harbour House (indoor plus a seasonal outdoor pool), 66 Saint Paul's (a small rooftop pool) and Palazzo Consiglia (a rooftop plunge pool plus a spa pool downstairs). Casa Ellul has none, nor does Domus Zamittello on Republic Street with its 21 rooms, nor Marea in Sliema.

Lifts are the second thing to check. These are protected historic buildings on several floors, and a lift is not a given – confirm it before you book if stairs with luggage would be a problem.

When to book

Malta's boutique inventory is the tightest stock on the islands. Iniala has 23 rooms, 66 Saint Paul's 18 and Palazzo Consiglia about 13 – three of the capital's best-known boutique hotels add up to roughly 55 rooms between them, so there is no "something will be free" tier the way there is on the resort strip.

April to June and September to October are when Valletta is best for walking and when these hotels are hardest to get. July and August are hot for a city stay with no pool, which is the one stretch of the year when the pool question above decides the booking rather than decorating it. Winter is the quiet exception: rates drop sharply and a pool-free hotel costs you nothing in January.
