Malta Hotels with a Private Pool (2026 Guide)

A hotel room with its own private pool is genuinely rare in Malta. Most of what gets sold as "private pool" is actually a boutique suite with a small plunge pool or hot tub on the terrace – a handful of hotels have exactly one such room. A separate, much-discussed category, the swim-up room with a terrace opening onto a shared pool, is not something any Maltese hotel publishes as a bookable room type; if a submerged pool bar is what you're actually after, that real, verified version exists at a handful of hotels – see the table below.

Plunge pool suite or private villa: what are you actually booking?

Two real categories exist in Malta, and they cost very different amounts. A third term gets used loosely in listings and is worth ruling out first.

If a listing calls a room "swim-up," check the room photos before paying a premium for it. No Maltese hotel's own material describes a ground-floor room opening directly into a shared pool as a bookable category – the closest real amenity is a swim-up pool bar, a different thing entirely, at a handful of northern resorts.

Maritim Antonine Hotel and Spa, Mellieħa

The most affordable genuine private pool on this list. This four-star spa hotel in Mellieħa village lists one exclusive deluxe suite with its own private pool and hot tub on the terrace, plus a separate living area – the hotel's own room pages are explicit that this is a single suite, not a room category you can pick freely.

Everything else at the property is a normal room near a shared pool, which is the honest trade at this price point. The hotel adds a spa, and Mellieħa puts you within reach of Mellieħa Bay, Malta's largest sandy beach, and the northern boat departures.

Lulu Boutique Hotel, Żebbuġ

The design-led option, and a guest favourite for service. Lulu is a small hotel in Żebbuġ, inland central Malta near the airport, that consistently rates near the top of the island for how it looks after people – the kind of place where the staff remember your name by day two.

It leans adults-friendly and calm, with pool-focused rooms and a rooftop setup rather than a sprawling resort pool complex. That makes it the pick for couples and design-minded travellers who want quiet water and a good breakfast over kids' clubs and scale – just budget for a car or taxis, since it is not a coastal base.

The Duke Boutique Hotel, Victoria, Gozo

The clearest example of the mislabel this guide warns about. The Duke is widely listed – on aggregators and in older guides, ours included until now – as having a "private pool" or a "rooftop plunge pool". Its own Booking.com listing, checked on 28 August 2026, shows no pool of any kind.

What it actually has is several room types with a private hot tub on the terrace, and one with a private sauna and hammam, plus views over Victoria towards the Citadel. That is a genuine draw for a couple – just not a pool, and worth knowing before you book on the strength of one.

It works well as a car-free base for Gozo: it sits by the island's main bus terminus, with restaurants and the Cittadella a short walk away. Check The Duke availability.

For a truly private pool: book a Gozo farmhouse

If "private" is non-negotiable, stop looking at hotels. Gozo's converted stone farmhouses come with their own pool and courtyard, no shared deck and no other guests – and for two or more people they frequently cost less per night than a premium hotel pool room.

The trade is self-catering: no reception, no housekeeping, no restaurant, and you will want a hire car. What you get is the whole house and the whole pool. When to book

Pool rooms are the first allocation to sell out at every property on this list, because they are a small fraction of each hotel's inventory and the main reason guests choose these hotels at all. That is true even when the hotel itself still shows plenty of standard rooms.

For July and August, book several months ahead. May, June and September give you warm water, cheaper rates and a far better chance of the room type you actually want – the pool is heated or the weather is doing the job anyway.
