Which one should you book?

The age rules, hotel by hotel

This is the table to read before you book. A hotel advertising "adults only 16+" can still have a booking platform that refuses a 17-year-old, or requires the person checking in to be 21.

If you are travelling with a 16 or 17-year-old, Seaview is the only property here whose policy is both young-friendly and consistent across the hotel and the platforms. Everywhere else, phone first and get it in writing.

Lure Hotel and Spa

The one to book first if you are a couple with no constraints. This Mellieħa spa hotel now carries the highest guest rating of any adults-only property on the island, and its score has climbed further over the past year.

It is built around doing very little: a spa, an indoor pool and a year-round outdoor infinity pool with a terrace, kept quiet by the no-children rule. The beach is close enough to pair a morning swim with an afternoon treatment.

23 Boutique Hotel

Book this one if you want Valletta on foot and no children in the pool. An 18th-century palazzo in Floriana, ten minutes' walk from the capital, its rating has risen sharply over the past year and is now among the best on this list.

You get a rooftop terrace, harbour proximity and the ferry terminals and day trips all within walking distance. What you do not get is a resort – there is no large wellness centre, and the pool is a boutique feature rather than a facility.

Seaview Hotel - Adults Only

The best-value child-free stay in Malta, by a wide margin. On the Bugibba promenade, it pairs a rooftop infinity pool with a second indoor pool, sauna and steam room, at a rate well under half what the northern spa hotels charge.

It is also the only property here whose age policy is unambiguous – 16 and over to stay, 18 and over for whoever checks in – which makes it the default for a couple travelling with an older teenager.

Riviera Spa Resort

The spa break for a smaller budget, and the newest adults-only conversion on the island. Riviera sits on the Marfa peninsula in the far north and leans hard into the spa-and-swim rhythm, with beaches close by.

It only became adults-only on 1 April 2025, which is the detail to know before you read the reviews: anything written before that date describes a mixed-age hotel with families in the pool. Its rating has risen meaningfully since the change.

H Hotel and Spa

Book it for the rooftop infinity pool and the ability to walk everywhere. H pairs that pool with a wellness centre and a polished, grown-up feel, in Paceville and therefore inside St Julian's restaurant and bar network.

Its guest rating has drifted very slightly down over the past year rather than up, which is worth knowing when you compare it against the risers on this list. It remains a solid, well-run mid-range choice.

Hugo's Boutique Hotel

The design pick, and the one with the unusual age rule. Overlooking St George's Bay, each floor is individually themed, giving the rooms far more character than a chain of the same size, with sea-view options up to a penthouse residence.

Its minimum age is 17 rather than 18, which is genuinely rare in Malta and occasionally decisive. Note that it is small: this is a boutique property, not a spa resort, so book it for the rooms and the location rather than the facilities.

Two more worth knowing about

Malta's boutique hotels are the deeper adults-only pool than this list suggests. Several small properties are effectively child-free by design without marketing themselves that way, which means they never appear in an "adults only" filter. Our boutique hotels guide covers them.

Why Malta has no consistent adults-only rule

In most Mediterranean destinations, adults-only means a brand standard: one chain applies one age limit across every property, and you learn it once. Malta has no equivalent. Its adults-only stock is a handful of independent hotels and small groups that each set their own rule, which is why the table above has three different ages in it.

The practical consequence is that the "adults only" filter on a booking site tells you nothing about the age limit – only that children are excluded at some threshold the hotel chose. Two hotels a hundred metres apart in St Julian's can differ by a year.

It also means the label is doing less work than you think. Several of Malta's quietest hotels are not adults-only at all; they are simply small, with no kids' club and no water slides. If quiet is what you are buying, judge the property rather than the filter.

Where should couples stay in Malta?

For a spa retreat and quiet, base in the north – Lure and Riviera are out there, near beaches and away from the crowds. For restaurants, bars and easy sightseeing, St Julian's wins: H Hotel and Hugo's put you in the middle of it. For a city base, 23 Boutique sits ten minutes from Valletta, and Seaview is the budget answer anywhere in between.
