Where to Stay in Gozo: Best Hotels & Areas (2026)

On Gozo you pick the area first and the hotel second: the island is villages, not a resort strip, and the distance between them is the whole trip. One question settles it – are you hiring a car? Which area should you book?

The Duke Boutique Hotel

The car-free answer, and the one hotel on this page you can run a whole Gozo trip from without hiring anything. It occupies the top two floors of the Duke complex on Republic Street in central Victoria, and it sits within about 200 m of the island's main bus terminus – the point every Gozo route passes through.

Set expectations on the water, though. The Duke has no swimming pool, verified on its Booking.com listing on 28 August 2026; what it has is a rooftop terrace with spa treatments and several room types with a private hot tub on the terrace, which is a different thing and often mislabelled elsewhere.

Grand Hotel Gozo

The arrival hotel, and the best-value pool on the island. It stands above Mġarr harbour in Għajnsielem, roughly 400 m from the ferry terminal, which makes it the one hotel you can reach from Malta on foot with a suitcase.

It also solves the winter problem: an indoor heated pool plus an outdoor pool open May to September, an Elemis spa with sauna, and rooftop dining in summer. Mġarr itself is a working harbour with a handful of restaurants rather than a resort, which is either the appeal or the objection.

Murella Living

Book this one to swim before breakfast. Murella sits in Marsalforn, Gozo's main seaside village, about 100 m from the water and roughly 260 m from Marsalforn Beach, on a bus route into Victoria.

There is no pool, which matters less here than anywhere else on the island: Marsalforn is the base most divers use, with the shore sites and the salt pans along the coast within easy reach. Our Malta and Gozo diving guide covers the sites themselves.

Hotel San Andrea

The cheapest way to wake up over the water in Gozo. It sits directly on the Xlendi promenade, so the bay, the cliff path and the village restaurants are a couple of minutes away, with a bus stop close enough to make it workable without a car.

Xlendi is small, which cuts both ways – lovely out of season, tight in August. There is no pool, and there need not be one when the bay is at the door.

Cornucopia Hotel

The farmhouse-conversion feel without going full self-catering. Cornucopia has 61 rooms in a converted stone farmhouse in Xagħra, with an outdoor pool and a hot tub in the garden but no indoor pool, so it is a spring-to-autumn stay rather than a winter one.

Xagħra puts you above Ramla Bay, Gozo's red-sand beach, and close to the Ġgantija temples. The village has its own square and restaurants, but the bus timetable makes a hire car the realistic option from here.

Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz

Gozo's luxury flagship, and a hotel that assumes you have a car. It has 141 rooms across eight floors in the countryside at San Lawrenz, with five pools – two indoor, three outdoor, plus a children's pool – open 07:00 to 21:00, and one of the larger spas in the Mediterranean.

Two honest caveats. The hotel does not state whether its indoor pools are heated, so ask before a winter booking. And it publishes no day pass – the widely searched "day by the pool" here is not a product you can simply turn up and buy.

Hotel Ta' Cenc and Spa

The other countryside luxury option, and the only hotel here with a beach of its own. Ta' Cenc has 83 rooms near the Ta' Cenc cliffs in Sannat, with indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts and a private beach down at Mġarr ix-Xini, the inlet used as a film location and still one of Gozo's quietest swims.

On heating, be careful what you read: some directories list its indoor pool as heated, but the hotel's own material does not confirm it. Ask directly if you are booking for the winter.

Two more worth knowing about

Quaint Boutique Hotel Nadur is the village-character option for anyone who does not need a pool. It has 12 rooms and no pool at all on 13th December Street in Nadur, in the quiet east of the island, and it works best as a base for walking and eating rather than swimming. Check Quaint Nadur rates.

A converted farmhouse is still Gozo's signature stay, and for couples or a group it beats every hotel here. Private pool, thick stone walls, a courtyard and nobody else in it – the trade is self-catering and a car. Our Malta and Gozo villas with private pools guide covers those.

Doing Gozo without a car in 2026 – what actually works

Gozo's buses are a separate network from Malta's, and every route hubs at Victoria. That single fact governs a car-free trip: journeys between two villages usually mean changing in Victoria, so the town is not just central on the map, it is central in the timetable.

The number that decides it is frequency. Off-peak, many Gozo routes run roughly every 60 to 90 minutes, which is fine for a planned day and unforgiving for a missed connection – an hour on a village road is a real cost when the island is only 14 km across. A 2026 summer network adds extended beach routes and more service towards Ramla Bay, which helps in July and August and not in January.

So the rule is: base in Victoria, or within a short walk of a named stop in Marsalforn, Xlendi or Mġarr. San Lawrenz, Sannat and Xagħra are car destinations, whatever the map distance suggests. One naming warning while you are reading timetables and addresses: Victoria is also called Rabat, and Rabat on Gozo is a completely different place from Rabat on Malta, next to Mdina.

Getting over is the easy part. The Gozo Channel car ferry between Ċirkewwa and Mġarr runs 24 hours a day, takes about 25 minutes, and costs foot passengers around €4.65 return in 2026.

There is also a direct fast ferry between Valletta and Mġarr, roughly 45 minutes, year-round, with about 15 sailings a day and a first departure around 05:45. A Sliema–Buġibba–Gozo fast ferry launched on 5 May 2026, with its last summer departure from Gozo around 21:15.

Fares change between operators and seasons, so check the current ones before you build a day around them.

When to book

Gozo's hotel stock is a fraction of Malta's, and the good rooms in Victoria and the seaside villages go for July and August long before the mainland resorts fill. Farmhouses go earlier still, because there is only ever one of each.
