Book db San Antonio Resort in Bugibba if the priority is the lowest all-inclusive price. It runs a splash park for younger children, sits on flat, walkable Bugibba with the promenade at the door, and comes in below the bigger Mellieħa resorts on the same dates.

Be honest with yourself about the format first. All-inclusive pays only if you actually eat and drink on site most days – if you plan to be in Valletta, Mdina and Marsaxlokk for dinner, you are buying meals twice.

Best hotels in Sliema and St Julian's

Book Hilton Malta at Portomaso. It has the pools, the private lido and the marina setting, and it puts you a short walk from Paceville's restaurants and a ferry ride from Valletta – the best-connected five-star base on the island for a first visit.

The two towns are not interchangeable. Sliema is the calmer, more residential side with the seafront promenade and the Valletta ferry; St Julian's is louder, with the bars and clubs of Paceville at its centre. Pick Sliema if you want to sleep, St Julian's if you want to be out.

Best boutique hotels in Valletta and Mdina

Book The Xara Palace for a special occasion. It is a Relais & Châteaux palazzo inside Mdina's walls – and staying inside the walled city is the whole point, because Mdina empties once the last coach leaves and you get the silent version most visitors never see.

The trade-offs are real: it is a small property, there is no beach, and you will want a hire car or taxis to reach the coast. In exchange you get somewhere genuinely unlike a resort, in a walled town that closes to traffic.

It is a small, highly rated property with a private-pool suite – a rare thing on mainland Malta, where most listings using the phrase mean something else. Żebbuġ is inland, close to the airport, not on the coast – you will want a car or taxis to reach the beach towns.

Book Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz if you want Gozo without giving up hotel service. It is a countryside resort near Dwejra with a spa, indoor and outdoor pools and restaurants on site – the thing a self-catering farmhouse cannot give you.

Gozo changes the shape of the trip. It is a 25-minute ferry from Ċirkewwa at Malta's northern tip, so day trips to Valletta become an outing rather than a bus ride. That is the trade for green countryside, empty roads and quiet evenings.
