Golden Bay is the beach most people picture when they think of Malta: a 150-metre arc of reddish-gold sand framed by ochre clay cliffs, with clear shallow water and a view stretching out over the northwest Mediterranean. It is one of only a handful of genuinely sandy beaches on the island, which is why it fills fast in summer and why getting the timing right matters more here than anywhere else.

Where is Golden Bay in Malta?
Golden Bay sits on the northwest coast of Malta, between the villages of Mellieħa and Mġarr, roughly 40 minutes by car from Valletta and 35 minutes from Sliema. It shares a stretch of cliff-backed coastline with Għajn Tuffieħa Bay to the south – a smaller, wilder beach reached by a long staircase – and Gnejna Bay further along.
The northwest is the least developed corner of Malta, which is part of the appeal. The Majjistral Nature Park runs behind the beach, covering 6 km² of coastal scrubland and cliff-edge trails open year-round.
Getting to Golden Bay
By car is the most practical option. The drive takes about 40 minutes from Valletta, 35 from Sliema or St Julian's. There is a pay car park above the beach that fills early on summer weekends – arrive before 9:30am or expect to park further up the hill.
Hire a car from Malta Airport and you have the flexibility to combine Golden Bay with Għajn Tuffieħa, Popeye Village or the Majjistral trails in the same morning.
By bus, Route 44 connects Valletta to Golden Bay (about 55 minutes), and Route 225 runs from Sliema and St Julian's. Buses run regularly in summer but less often in shoulder season – check Tallinja for live schedules. The bus stops above the beach; the walk down takes five minutes.
By transfer is the easiest option if you want door-to-door without driving. A private transfer from your hotel can be arranged for a half-day or full-day beach trip.
What to do at Golden Bay
Swimming and sunbathing – the main event. The sand is clean and the seabed slopes gently, making it good for families with young children. Sunbeds and parasols are available for hire from the beach operator. Lifeguards are on duty throughout summer.
Water sports – Aquamarine Watersports operates on the beach in season, offering jet ski hire, kayak rental and pedalo hire. The water clarity in the northwest is among the best on the island.
Horse riding on the clifftops – Golden Bay Horse Riding runs treks along the cliffs above the beach, with views back down over the bay and out across the Mediterranean. The one-hour ride covers the clifftop above Golden Bay; the 90-minute sunset ride extends along the northwest coast as the light drops. Book directly on their website; slots fill in peak season.
Hiking in Majjistral Nature Park – the trails behind the beach make for an easy morning walk before the beach fills up. The clifftop path above Għajn Tuffieħa offers the widest views of the northwest coast.
Sunset watching – the beach faces northwest, which means it catches the sun until it drops into the sea in the evening. The clifftop above the bay gives a higher vantage point for the full panorama.
When to visit Golden Bay
May and June are the sweet spot: warm enough to swim (sea around 22–23°C), far fewer people than August, and the cliffside vegetation is still green. Weekday mornings before 11am you can walk straight onto good sand.
July and August mean heat, crowds and competition for sunbeds. The beach fills before 10am on summer weekends; go early or accept that it will be packed. The water is warm (25–26°C) and the late-afternoon light is genuinely beautiful, but midday is punishing.

November to March – the beach is open but facilities are closed. Winter swells can make swimming rough, and the car park is unstaffed. Worth a walk if you're in the area.
Golden Bay vs Għajn Tuffieħa
These two beaches share the same cliff system and are a five-minute walk apart, but they feel different.
Golden Bay has the facilities: sunbeds, a beach bar, the hotel above and a proper car park. It is the choice if you want a comfortable beach day with everything to hand.
Għajn Tuffieħa is reached by a long concrete staircase with no vehicle access, which acts as a natural crowd filter. The sand and water quality are similar – some say better – but you bring your own food and water. It stays significantly quieter throughout the day, even in peak season.
If you have transport and only one morning, go to Golden Bay early and walk over to Għajn Tuffieħa once the main beach fills up. The clifftop path connecting them takes about 15 minutes.
Golden Bay earns its reputation as Malta's best sandy beach honestly. The combination of proper sand, clear water, dramatic clay cliffs and a sunset facing west over open sea is hard to match anywhere else on the island. Go early, stay for the afternoon light and walk up to the clifftop before you leave.
