Best Hotels in Mellieħa, Malta (2026)

Mellieħa is two separate bases with one name, and choosing between them decides your holiday more than any star rating does. The bay – Għadira – has the big resorts, sitting on Malta's largest sandy beach. The hilltop village sits on a ridge above it, with the spa hotels, the boutique stay and the restaurants, but a steep descent between you and the water.

So the question to answer first is simple: will you actually walk to the sand? If yes, book on the bay. If the beach is a two-mornings-out-of-seven proposition, the village gives you more hotel for the money and a quieter evening. Every property below was checked on 28 August 2026. Which one should you book?

db Seabank Resort and Spa

The default booking on the bay, and the only Mellieħa resort that opens straight onto Għadira sand. It is one of Malta's largest hotels at around 500 rooms, rated 4-star superior, and it runs as a full all-inclusive.

The scale is the point and the price: the largest lagoon-style outdoor pool in Malta, an adults-only pool with a swim-up bar, a children's pool and a kids' club, all of it busy in high summer. Our family hotels guide goes deeper on the children's side.

Ramla Bay Resort

Book this one to swap a public beach for a private one. Ramla Bay sits out on the Marfa tip at the top of the peninsula, looking across to Gozo and Comino, with its own sandy beach and three saltwater pools.

It also swims year-round: two indoor heated pools, one adults-only and one for families, kept at 27 to 30°C under Maltese health regulations, while the outdoor facilities run April to October. Note this is the Marfa headland, not Ramla Bay on Gozo – different beach, different island.

Mellieħa Holiday Centre

The bay's self-catering answer, and the best value in Mellieħa for a group of five or six. It is a bungalow complex rather than a hotel: 151 bungalows of roughly 70 m², sleeping up to six, with three pools including an indoor one heated through winter.

Two things to know. The guest-review sample is small compared with the big resorts, so the score carries less weight than usual. And between 1 June and 4 September the indoor pool and spa area are restricted to guests aged 15 and over.

Lure Hotel and Spa

Mellieħa's adults-only hotel, and currently the highest-rated hotel in the town by a clear margin. It is up in the village on Misraħ il-Parroċċa, built around a rooftop pool and an indoor pool with a full spa menu and no kids' club anywhere near it.

The trade is the one every village hotel makes: you are above the bay rather than on it, which for couples is usually the right way round. Its age policy sits in our adults-only hotels guide.

Hotel VIU57

The design-led option, on the village square rather than the resort strip. It has 57 rooms and an outdoor pool, with balconies looking out over the rooftops and the bay below – closer in feel to a city boutique hotel than to anything on Għadira.

Being on the square means the parish church, the restaurants and the local bars are all on foot, which no bay hotel can claim. The sand is not: that is a bus ride or a drive down the hill.

Solana Hotel and Spa

The most facilities per euro in Mellieħa. A 4-star with 241 rooms in the village, it runs three outdoor pools, an indoor pool and a children's pool at a rate that undercuts every bay resort here, and it offers self-catering room types as well as standard board.

It is roughly a 10-minute walk above the bay, the closest of the village hotels to the sand. Whether the indoor pool is heated is not published, so ask before booking a winter stay on the strength of it.

Maritim Antonine Hotel and Spa

The one to book outside summer, because its indoor pool is heated and open all year. It is a 280-room hotel on George Borg Olivier Street with two outdoor pools, one of them on the roof, a children's pool and the heated indoor pool attached to a wellbeing spa.

It also holds the closest thing mainland Malta has to a private-pool room: a single Penthouse Suite with its own pool, plus a separate suite type with a hot tub. That is one room, not a category, so it goes early.

Two more worth knowing about

Pergola Hotel and Spa is the family option up in the village, with 105 rooms, two outdoor pools, an indoor warm pool and a children's pool, plus a jacuzzi and sauna. It is the sensible middle if Solana is full and Maritim is over budget. Check Pergola rates.

Radisson Blu Golden Bay is often listed as a Mellieħa hotel, and geographically that is a stretch. It sits above Golden Bay, a different beach a drive away from both the village and Għadira, and it is the north coast's beachfront 5-star rather than a Mellieħa town option. What happened to the Mellieħa Bay Hotel?

The Mellieħa Bay Hotel ceased operations in 2019 and has not reopened. Owned by the Mizzi Group, it was for decades one of the largest hotels on the bay, and it still appears on old booking links, in cached listings and in travel articles that have not been updated.

The Planning Authority approved its demolition under PA/09876/19 and a larger replacement hotel under PA/01948/20. The approved scheme roughly doubles the footprint and takes the hotel from 313 rooms to 359, with five restaurants, two bars and two pool bars spread across eleven blocks; an earlier version at 421 rooms was scaled back.

As of the most recent reporting in 2023 the rebuild had not delivered a working hotel, and nothing indicates it has opened since. Checked on 28 August 2026, its Booking.com page no longer resolves to a property at all – it redirects to a general Mellieħa search. If you were sent an old link for it, the hotel does not exist to book; the name may return on the new build, with no confirmed date.

Bay or village? What "Mellieħa Bay views" actually means

Village hotels advertise Mellieħa Bay views, and they are telling the truth. A view is not access. The village sits on a ridge above Għadira, and the descent that takes ten minutes downhill is the same slope on the way back, in August, carrying wet towels and a cool bag.

The bay properties are db Seabank, Mellieħa Holiday Centre and the Luna Holiday Complex, the last of these a budget apart-hotel with a rooftop adults-only pool. Ramla Bay Resort is a separate case, out on the Marfa tip with private sand rather than on Għadira. Everything else here is up in the village.

The honest rule: with small children or no car, book on the bay; as two adults with a hire car and evenings that involve restaurants, the village is the better week. Mellieħa Bay covers the beach itself, and things to do in Mellieħa the rest of the town.

When to book

Mellieħa's bay resorts sell their family rooms for July and August months ahead, and Lure's best rooms go early across the whole shoulder season, since it is the town's only adults-only hotel. There is no overflow tier here the way there is in Buġibba.
