Malta Airport is about 12 km from St Julian's – roughly 15 minutes when the road flows, and up to 45 minutes when the Marsa junction locks up. The official fixed taxi fare is around €20 per vehicle, and the Airport Direct buses TD2 and TD3 cost €3 per person and run every 30 minutes. On distance alone this should be one of the easiest arrivals in Malta.
The thing that complicates it is not the road, it is the destination. St Julian's is not one place – it spreads across Spinola Bay, St George's Bay, Paceville and Portomaso, with hotels scattered along the seafront and up steep side streets. Where a vehicle actually puts you down matters more here than on any other airport route on the island.

The split that decides it is per vehicle against per person. A €20 taxi is more than six times the bus fare for a solo traveller, and it is still cheaper than four bus tickets only once you count the luggage, the walk and the wait.

The bus wins on price at every group size up to four – but the gap narrows to €8, and unlike the short run into Valletta that €8 is buying you something specific here: a drop at your actual address rather than at a stop that may be a hill away from it.
How long does the drive actually take?
Roughly 12 km, and the clock depends on one junction rather than the distance. With the road flowing the run takes about 15 minutes; a normal midday arrival lands nearer 20 to 25.
The bottleneck is the Marsa junction, which every route out of the airport has to clear. When it locks up at weekday rush hour or on a summer evening, the same 12 km can take up to 45 minutes – and nothing on this list escapes it, because a taxi, a private transfer and the bus all sit in the identical queue. The practical consequence: if you have a dinner reservation, a boat or a connecting Gozo ferry on arrival day, build the buffer around Marsa rather than around the kilometres.
How much is a taxi from Malta Airport to St Julian's?

The weakness of the rank is the queue. After several summer flights land together it can back up badly, and a fixed fare does nothing to shorten the wait.
Which Airport Direct bus goes to St Julian's?
Two routes serve this side of the island, and they take different roads for the same €3.
- TD2: runs direct to St Julian's via Pembroke, St George's Bay and Paceville – the faster of the two
- TD3: reaches St Julian's the long way round via Gżira and Sliema, useful if you are staying on the Sliema front
- Fare: €3 per journey on both, paid onboard by cash or contactless, no booking possible
- Frequency: every 30 minutes on each route
- Onboard: luggage racks, USB charging and Wi-Fi
Pick TD2 if your hotel is at the Paceville or St George's Bay end, and TD3 if you are closer to Spinola or the Sliema border. Choosing wrong can add 15 minutes and an unplanned walk.
Regular Tallinja town buses cover the same coast for €2.00 in winter and €2.50 in summer. They stop everywhere and save you well under a euro – rarely the right trade after a flight.

Should you pre-book a private transfer?
The case rests on the sprawl rather than the speed. A pre-booked driver takes you to the address, not to the nearest terminus – which on a hill in August with two cases is the whole point.
It also removes the queue. A driver tracking your flight number is waiting whether you land on time or two hours late, so booking the transfer before you fly turns a late arrival into a non-event.
