How long does the journey take?

Gozo isn't reached in one hop. First comes the road leg from the airport in the south up to Ċirkewwa at Malta's northern tip – around 40 km, or about 45 minutes in clear traffic, the longest mainland drive you'll make.

Then the Gozo Channel ferry crosses to Mġarr in about 25 minutes, sailing roughly every 45 minutes through the day and around the clock. Door to door, allow about 1.5 hours by private transfer and well over two by bus and ferry.

With luggage after a flight, this is the easiest way to a Gozo base. A driver meets you in arrivals, the fare is fixed before you travel, and the private transfer takes the long road north and the car ferry in one booking – dropping you at your accommodation on Gozo.

Hiring a car and the car ferry

If you want wheels on Gozo – and the island is best explored with them – pick up a hire car at the airport and drive straight onto the ferry. Cars board at Ċirkewwa and the crossing is the same 25 minutes.

You pay only on the way back, at Mġarr: around €15.70 for a car and driver, return. In peak summer the Ċirkewwa car queue can swallow a sailing or two on weekends, so leave a margin if you're aiming for a particular boat.

Bus and ferry on a budget

The cheapest route stitches together public transport. The TD1 Airport Direct bus – the same one that serves Mellieħa – runs from the airport to Ċirkewwa for around €3, then the foot-passenger ferry is about €4.65 return, paid at Mġarr on the way back.

From Mġarr, Gozo's buses fan out to Victoria and the coastal towns for around €2. It works, but TD1 runs only about hourly and stops all the way north, so with cases it's a long, stop-start arrival – fine if you're travelling light and not in a rush.

The Valletta fast ferry shortcut

Foot passengers have a neat alternative to the cross-Malta drive. Instead of heading to Ċirkewwa, go to Valletta and take the Gozo fast ferry – a passenger catamaran from the Grand Harbour straight to Mġarr in about 45 minutes.

From the airport, the TD4 Airport Direct bus reaches Valletta in 15 to 20 minutes, and the fast ferry runs around 15 sailings a day at roughly €15 return, less if you book online. With no car to shift, it's often quicker and simpler than the northern road.
