Malta Airport to Gozo: Ferry, Transfer & Bus (2026)

Malta Airport to Gozo is a two-leg trip, and the first leg is shorter than most guides claim. The airport sits about 27 km from the Ċirkewwa ferry terminal – roughly 35 to 45 minutes by road depending on traffic, not the 45-plus minutes older guides quote. The Gozo Channel crossing to Mġarr then takes about 25 minutes and runs 24 hours a day.

The bigger change is for foot passengers. Since 5 May 2026 a third route exists – a fast ferry from Sliema and Buġibba straight to Mġarr – alongside the Ċirkewwa road crossing and the long-standing Valletta fast ferry. Which one wins comes down to one question: are you bringing a car, and how much luggage are you dragging?

How long does Malta Airport to Gozo take?

The road leg is the same 27 km whichever vehicle covers it, so the real variable is what happens at the water. A car ferry runs around the clock; the fast ferries do not.

Allow more than the arithmetic suggests if you are aiming at a specific sailing. The Ċirkewwa terminal is at the very tip of Malta, and missing a boat in winter costs you more waiting than missing one in July.

What does the Gozo Channel car ferry cost?

This is the main crossing – Ċirkewwa to Mġarr, about 25 minutes, sailing every 15 to 45 minutes depending on the hour, 24 hours a day, all year.

The pricing quirk catches everyone: you buy nothing at Ċirkewwa. The return fare is collected at Mġarr when you leave Gozo, so the outbound crossing feels free and the whole round trip is paid on the way home.

The night fare applies to departures from Mġarr between 20:00 and 06:00, from November to March only. Because the fare is charged on the way back, that discount is a genuine saving for anyone leaving Gozo late on a winter evening – and it is missing from almost every guide to this route.

Foot passengers never queue for this. The car queue is the car queue; walk-on passengers board separately and are rarely affected.

Is the Valletta fast ferry quicker?

For foot passengers, often yes. The Gozo Highspeed catamaran runs from Valletta's Grand Harbour to Mġarr in about 45 minutes, which lets you skip the long northern road entirely. From the airport, the TD4 Airport Direct bus reaches Valletta in 15 to 20 minutes for €3.

One honest caveat on the fare. Older guides – including this one previously – quoted about €15 return with roughly 15 sailings a day. We could not re-confirm either figure against the operator this pass. Booking aggregators dated 2026 quote single fares in the €6–7.50 range, and sailing counts range from "every one to two hours" to around 40 a day in high season, which is too wide a spread to publish as fact.

The new Sliema and Buġibba fast ferry

A third foot-passenger route opened on 5 May 2026: a fast ferry running Sliema – Buġibba – Mġarr, each leg taking roughly 25 to 30 minutes. It is the first direct sea link to Gozo from the mid-island resort strip.

• Sliema to Gozo: €8.50 adult one way
• Buġibba to Gozo: €6.50 adult one way
• Sliema to Buġibba: €6.50 adult one way
• Passengers: foot only – no cars, and no vehicle deck at all
• Season: sailings are more frequent in summer than winter, and the last return from Mġarr is early evening in summer but mid-afternoon in winter

Published sailing counts and the exact last-boat time disagree between listings, so treat the timetable as something to check rather than assume – particularly the winter last return, which is early enough to strand a day tripper.

This matters most if you are staying in Sliema, St Julian's or Buġibba, because it removes the cross-island road journey from a Gozo day. Buġibba is also on the TD1 corridor from the airport, so an arrival-day connection is possible, if tight.

The cheapest route: TD1 and the foot ferry

Airport Direct route TD1 runs from the airport to Ċirkewwa for €3.50 – and that €3.50 is worth noting, because TD1 is the one Airport Direct route priced above the others; TD2 to TD5 all cost €3. It calls at Rabat, Buġibba, Qawra and Mellieħa on the way north, and runs about hourly.

At Ċirkewwa you walk on to the ferry, pay nothing outbound, and settle the €4.65 foot return at Mġarr on the way back. Gozo's own buses then fan out from Mġarr to Victoria and the coast for about €2.

Budget from roughly €10 per person all-in, and well over two and a half hours door to door. It works, but TD1's hourly frequency is the weak link: land at the wrong moment and the wait alone eats 50 minutes.

A direct transfer to your Gozo address

Yes – a single private transfer covers the whole trip to a Gozo address. A driver meets you at Malta International Airport (Luqa), the fare is fixed before you travel, and the one booking covers the northern road, the Gozo Channel ferry and the Gozo-side drive – to a farmhouse, villa or hotel anywhere on the island. Some operators drive onto the ferry with you; others hand over to a Gozo-side driver at Mġarr.

That matters most for a self-catering base off the main routes. Most of Gozo's holiday homes are farmhouses and villas in the inland villages – Xagħra, Nadur, Għarb, Munxar, Sannat – not near the port.

The bus-and-ferry route leaves you in Victoria or Mġarr with a bus change or a local taxi still between you and the door, on connections that thin out in the evening. A door-to-door transfer collapses that chain into one fixed fare.

For a hotel in Victoria or down at Mġarr, the ferry and a short bus are manageable enough on their own.

There is also a middle option most guides miss: a direct taxi or private transfer covering only the airport-to-Ċirkewwa road leg, sold separately from a full door-to-door Gozo transfer. It suits a foot passenger who wants a fast, fixed-fare run north and is happy to walk onto the ferry alone. Several operators sell it; prices vary and we have not verified a current figure, so ask for a quote rather than assuming it undercuts the full transfer.
